Year 1 - Plurals that end in es

Plurals that end in es informs KS1 children of the rule of adding this suffix to a noun. The National Curriculum requires Year 1 children to know how to spell the ‘iz’ sound when adding ‘es’ to a word to make it plural.

There is one box but if there are two, we would say two boxes. The ‘es’ letters makes an ‘iz’ sound but are spelt ‘es’. Test your knowledge on these ‘es’ plural words.

    Foxes have whiskers on their legs and faces!

    A brush is an item and something you can do. If we say she brushes her hair, then we also add the 'es' onto the end of the word.

    We would say one bus and two buses. The bus service in London is run by TfL, which stands for Transport for London.
  4. Spell the missing word: She has lots of ____ in her wardrobe.
    One of the most famous dresses of all time was Princess Diana's wedding dress that had a twenty-five foot train.
  5. Spell the missing word: How many centimetres in two ____?
    The answer is 5.08 cm.
  6. Spell the missing word: Here is a picture of one church, but we write ____ if there are two.
    The word stays the same and you only add 'es' onto the end.
  7. Spell the missing word: Australia has some of the most beautiful ____ in the world.
    There is a beach in Australia called the Ninety Mile Beach and guess what...it's over ninety miles long!
  8. Spell the missing word: Will you wash the ____?
    Here you have the 'i' sound from the letter 'i' and the 'i' sound from the letter 'e'.
  9. Spell the missing word: He has lots of ____.
    We also add the 'es' sound to verbs. We could say watch is something you wear on your wrist but it is also something you do. We could, therefore, write 'He watches television.'
