When you say the ‘ar’ sound, you sound like a pirate! There are a few words with this sound, so let’s get to it - test your knowledge on these ‘ar’ word spellings.

  1. Spell the missing word: My favourite lesson in school is ____.
    Vincent Van Gogh is a very famous artist; he is also famous for cutting off his own ear!
  2. Spell the missing word: Don't use butter, use ____.
    Lard is very similar to butter but it comes from a pig, not a cow. It can be used in cooking and baking just like butter, but is considered slightly more unhealthy for you.
  3. Spell the missing word: I'm going to play in the ____.
    The most popular park in London is called Hyde Park.
  4. Spell the missing word: He bought a new ____.
    There is a word 'are', as in: 'Are you my friend?' This is spelt with an 'e' at the end but makes the 'ar' sound. Normally, if you see 'are' it makes an 'air' sound, like in the words 'hare' and 'stare'.
  5. Spell the missing word: Put the pigs in the ____.
    A barn is a building that is separate to your house and is often where farmers store animals or hay.
  6. Spell the missing word: If you look up at the night sky, you see lots of ____.
    The nearest star to us is the sun.

    The harp is one of the oldest instruments in the world and was used 5,000 years ago!
  8. Spell the missing word: I love planting flowers in my ____.
    Each flower and vegetable will need to be planted during different times of the year. You also have to plan ahead - if you want runner beans in September, you need to plant them in May.
  9. Spell the missing word: Look at these two ____.
    Your arm is made up of three long bones: one in your upper arm and two in your forearm/lower arm.
  10. Spell the missing word: Don't go outside, it is too ____ out there.
    The first answer shows a 'b', which people often get confused with a 'd'.
