Year 1 - The Sound k

This Sound k spelling quiz informs KS1 children that ‘k’ is used instead of ‘c’ before certain letters. The spellings in this quiz have been taken from and added to those in the National Curriculum.

The sounds ‘k’ and ‘c’ are easily confused, especially as they can make the same noise. To know whether a word is spelt with a ‘k’ we look at the letter following it, so if the letters ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’ are after the letter – it is more than likely going to be spelt with a ‘k’. Test your knowledge on spellings with the ‘k’ sound.

    The idea of kissing a frog and it turning into a prince comes from the book called The Frog Prince by Brothers Grimm.
  4. Spell the missing word: She dropped a hot cup of tea and it scorched her ____.
    When carrying hot drinks, you have to be very careful. If you are burnt, you need to run the burn under a tap for twenty minutes and might even need to go to hospital.
  5. If you need to spell a word and it has a k/c sound, which letters do we look for to follow that sound?
    So if the letter following the k sound is e, i or y it is going to be spelt with the k and not the c letter.
  6. Spell the missing word: Please ____ this locket safe.
    A locket opens up and you can put pictures of loved ones in. You can wear the locket around your neck and have your loved ones near your heart all day!
  7. Spell the missing word: Leonardo da Vinci drew a ____ of a helicopter.
    The first helicopter wasn't built until the 1940s but Leonardo da Vinci drew something very similar four hundred years beforehand.

    He was famous for having six wives.
  9. Spell the missing word: I will ____ the dragon!
    There is a red dragon on the Welsh flag. Often we say we would slay the dragon, instead of kill him.
  10. Spell the missing word: Have you cleaned your ____?
    The letter after the k/c sound is an i, so we know the word will start with a k.
