Math - Counting in the Thousands

In this Spanish Medium Review quiz you will be reviewing how to count in the thousands. If you have not already done so, before moving on with this quiz on how to count in the thousand, be sure to check out the quizzes on counting in the hundreds, i.e., Math: Counting in Hundred (Quiz 1) and Math: Counting in Hundreds (Quiz 2), as they will teach you the process of how to count using higher numbers.

The first thing you learned in connection with counting in the hundreds is that cien, which is Spanish for 100, becomes cientos to say hundreds. Then you learned that in order to say 200 you do not say 'dos cien' or 'dos cientos' but, rather, you say 'doscientos' in one word. This rule changes when it comes to the thousands.

THE THOUSANDS

To begin with, a thousand in Spanish is the word 'mil'. To then say that 'he has a thousand dollars' you would say, 'él tiene un mil dólares'. Moving forward, in order to say that 'he has two thousand dollars' you would say, 'él tiene dos mil dólares'. Notice that dos and mil are once again separated from each other. Unlike in the hundreds, you do not say dosmil or tresmil, etc.

To say ten thousand in Spanish you would say it as 'diez mil' and to say a hundred thousand it would be said as 'cien mil'. In order to say four hundred thousand it would be said or stated as 'cuatrocientos mil'. Finally, if you were to say three thousand five hundred twenty-five you would say it as 'tres mil quinientos veinte y cinco' (3,525). Notice that the numbers in the hundreds are stated as they should be whether they come before the thousand (mil) or after the thousand.

HOW MANY NEW VOCABULARY WORDS?

As you can see, for this quiz you only have to learn one new vocabulary word. That word is mil. However, you do need to pay close attention as to the formatting of how the higher numbers must be stated when put together.

Now, if you believe that you are quite ready to start saying some big, long numbers, then please move on to take the quiz. The quiz contains 5 numbers stated in English and you must find the right Spanish number to match them and then you will be given 5 Spanish numbers and you will need to match them with the correct English number. Watch out for spelling because it can really trip you up.

  1. What is the number 6,219 in Spanish?
The second answer does not show the proper usage of 200. It should not show two words to say this. The third answer shows the improper way of writing 6,000 so it, too, is not correct. The last answer has placed a 'y' after 200. Starting with the number 101 and upwards, the 'y' is not used after ciento. The Spanish number for 6,219 is seis mil doscientos diez y nueve.
  2. What is the number 3,738 in Spanish?
In the first answer the Spanish number for 30 has been misspelled. In the second answer the Spanish number for 700 has been misspelled. Siete is the number 7 but the 'i' is dropped with the hundreds just as it was dropped with 70. In the third answer the number 700 is again misspelled by making 'ie' read as 'ei' in cientos. The Spanish number for 3,738 is tres mil setecientos treinta y ocho.
  3. What is the number 24,111 in Spanish?
In the first answer the number uno has been placed before ciento. This is not the proper way to say one hundred The uno is not needed. The third answer is missing the 'y' from the number 24. If you want to connect 20 with the number 4 it could be written as veinticuatro with the 'i' replacing the 'y' and joining the two words but that is not being shown in the third answer. The last answer has placed a 'y' after ciento. The rules state that the 'y' is never used immediately after the hundreds. The Spanish number for 24,111 is veinte y cuatro mil ciento once.
  4. What is the number 599,999 in Spanish?
This is a long number to write out! The second answer has used the improper spelling for 500. Cinco is not used in the number 500. The Spanish number for 599,999 is quinientos noventa y nueve mil novecientos noventa y nueve.
